A CircleSquare Review
Pizza, Pizza, Pizza! We definitely have all heard and eaten the old-fashioned Italian style, or even the U.S. pizza at least once in our lifetime; especially most of us grew up accustomed to the “7-5-5-2-5-2-5” tone – the number to dial for Pizza Hut Malaysia (coincidentally it shares the same tune as the theme song of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Cowabunga!!). Pizza has been made famous by the Italians, but what about French pizza?
FLAM’s, a lil’ bistro located at Jalan Changkat, Bukit Bintang, serves the said traditional French pizza! The name “FLAM” is an abbreviation for Flammekuchen, or the tarte flambee – essentially a flat bread baked in high-heat with toppings of cream cheese, onions and bacon – in place of the traditional tomato base and mozzarella cheese. Situated among a sea of watering holes along Jalan Changkat, you can easily breathe in an inquisitive whiff of cream cheese merging with hot, pipping flat bread when you walk past FLAM’S; which is also connected to Route66 Burger Bar.
We decided to check it out for dinner.
Recommended by the floor staff, we ordered the Smoked Salmon FLAM’S and the Seafood FLAM’S. We also had the opportunity to witness how the pizzas were made – inside a traditional wood-fire brick oven.
First off, we munched through their appetizer while waiting for the pizzas to be done.
The Jumbo Combo Platter – a selection of chicken wings, fried calamari, meatballs & fish fingers.
Smoked Salmon FLAM’S – a pizza with toppings of Norwegian smoked salmon, sliced onions and capers, on top of fresh cream cheese.
Seafood FLAM’S – topped with fresh seafood, sautéed in white wine and garlic.
As FLAM’S is connected to ROUTE66 BURGER BAR, we also tried one of their specialty burgers – Route66, The Original. We were feeling adventurous at that moment, so we also ordered the Peanut Butter Special!
ROUTE66, The Original – the beef patty was grilled to perfection, served with cheese, tomato slices, salad, onions and pickles, with a side of fries. Just imagine eating a Ramly burger, but double the size of the beef patty.
Peanut Butter Special – this particular burger has the traditional grilled patty, with beef bacon (or chicken breast) and onion, with a side of fries. The unique highlight of this burger was the peanut butter sauce! A peculiar, yet interesting combination, though.
Overall, it’s a nice place to chill with friends. The food is not bad, however we felt that FLAM’S was being a lil scrooge on the toppings for the pizza, and every bite of the pizza was filled with cream cheese. The thin crust was a fine touch; but being typical Malaysians, it almost felt like we were having expensive naan with a generous spread of cream cheese. The burgers were okay, although they seem a bit dry. The Peanut Butter Special was definitely an eye-opener.
