Spending the regular weekend out in Changkat is fine and fun, but is hardly memorable. If you really want an epic weekend, it doesn’t take much: there are key music festivals in Asia that are only a short flight away, and you might just make it back in time for the office on Monday morning.
Here are four festivals to mark on your calendar
With a name like “clockenflap”, you know what you’re going to get: an eclectic but playful mix of music, arts, and films. The festival first kicked off in 2008, and has since grown to become one of Hong Kong’s go-to arts festivals during year-end holiday season. This year’s headliners include a dose of energetic rock by The Libertines, weepy Irish soul by Damien Rice, and nostalgic good times by Earth Wind and Fire. There’s definitely something for everyone here.
When: 27-29 November, 2015
Where: West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, Hong Kong
St Jerome’s Laneway Music Festival Singapore 2016
What started off as a simple laneway gig in Melbourne’s St Jerome 10 years ago has grown to become one of the key festivals across Australia and Singapore. Yes, there are times when the crowd appears to be a parody of hipsters in thongs, beards, and ironic fashion, but don’t let that deter you from seeing some of the best performers live. Among the names being touted for Singapore’s leg of the festival include Lana Del Rey, Chvrches, The Weeknd and Albert Hammond Jr.
When: January 30, 2016
Where: The Meadow, Gardens By The Bay, Singapore
You don’t need a ticket to the States to see one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world. Since it started 10 years ago, the Java Jazz festival has grown in size and influence, having had new and old legends like Stevie Wonder, Joss Stone, Dave Grusin, George Duke, and the late James Brown perform to thousands. Next year’s line-up hasn’t been announced yet, but if past line-ups are anything to go by, expect nothing less than spectacular.
When: March 11-13, 2016
Where: Jakarta International Expo, Indonesia
No music festival lineup would be complete without mentioning ZoukOut. Held towards the year-end holidays, ZoukOut is where thousands let their hair down and dance to the world’s top DJs. And we’re talking about the very best: This year, Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto are among those who are headlining the two-day dance music festival.
When: 11-12 December, 2015
Where: Siloso Beach, Sentosa, Singapore.
