There may be a shortage in aged whiskeys worldwide but it doesn’t seem to be the case at 61 Monarchy, Klang Valley’s newest haven in Damansara Uptown that specifically caters to drinkers with a fiery passion for whiskeys.
A more relaxed setting compared to its sister bar, Hyde53M, 61 Monarchy is a veritable playground that attracts some of the most fiercely passionate whiskey enthusiasts as patrons. Spend some time with some of them who walk through 61 Monarchy’s doors and you could possibly end up going home with a wealth of knowledge on whiskeys. Over on the other side of the bar, rest assured the servers and bartenders are equally as passionate on the subject too.
Adventurous drinkers should be prepared for a list of over 300 types of whiskey available at this bar, from familiar favourites like Laphroig, Lagavulin and Hibiki to treasured brands like the treasured Karuizawa. If you aren’t the sort who fancies venturing into uncharted territory, 61 Monarchy has got you covered with a menu of cocktails that changes every few weeks. The first concoction that we tried was the Wild & Smokey, 61 Monarchy’s take on the Old Fashioned that involves using a smoking glass skull contraption with cherry wood chips to further enhance the flavour of maraschino cherries in this Wild Turkey Bourbon-based drink. The second, the Fire Breather, a Whisky Sour infused with cili padi (or three, once at a customer’s request) to add a spicy bang to this classic.
As for decor, you could say that 61 Monarchy’s setting is akin to the characteristics of a well-aged whiskey: full of personality. While most speakeasies look to the Prohibition era as inspiration, using plush leather seats, brass fittings and exposed brick to full effect, this whiskey bar’s styling leans more towards British colonial. Over here, you can find Rattan chairs and wooden shutters instead paired with palm foliage print cushions and fan palm plants. One should also note (if you are a smoker) that 61 Monarchy’s smoking section is noticeably less cramped than Hyde53M’s, which makes it a more comfortable and less stuffy space for smokers.
Even if you aren’t a whiskey fan, you should pay this establishment a visit at least once. Be warned that drinks don’t come cheap (the two drinks came up to RM100), but given the quality of drinks served here, many whiskey enthusiasts will find that a price worth paying for.
