Financial forecasts might predict a dismal year ahead but it doesn’t seem to be the case, judging from the rate of new bars that are popping up every week in Klang Valley. As if Malaysia’s thirst for alcohol cannot be quenched fast enough, any mere mention of the word “speakeasy” will send us into a cocktail induced frenzy. If that sounds like you to a T, then you will be excited about the arrival of The Vault KL.
It has been full house since it opened its doors not too long ago. It’s unsurprising really when local celeb Patricia K and her business partner Darren Yoon are the brains behind this Prohibition inspired operation. You might say that star power might be at play here (a definite asset, of course) but the combination of Patricia’s skill at self-positioning and self marketing as a TV host/emcee/DJ/instructor with Darren’s business savvy makes for a formidable pairing.
The devil is in the details and the owners of The Vault KL aim to make service of utmost importance at The Vault KL. Each service staff was trained to ensure patrons always had a drink in hand, and when asked, even knew the ingredients of each cocktail by heart.
This attention to detail even extends to The Vault KL’s Prohibition-era aesthetic. Behind the heavy medieval style sliding door that automatically opens (is there someone there that watches through the peephole all night?), a flapper girl on an actual swing at the entrance sets the tone for what’s to come after. The Vault KL employs the use of rich Chesterfield style booth seats, exposed brick walls and moody lighting with vintage fixtures for its interior, accompanied by jazz swing in the background early in the night. It is a comfortable enough environment for conversation until later in the night. When the DJ takes over, deep house and trop house reigns supreme.
But ambience alone doesn’t a bar maketh. Patricia and Darren enlisted the help of bar consultant Josh Ivanovic and experienced bartenders from London and Malaysia, Darien Topulli and Erik respectively, to plan out a monthly list of exclusive tipples that creatively makes use of local ingredients like pandan leaves and seasonal fruits. Word of warning though, their cocktails are well-balanced in flavour, which makes them deceptively strong.
The Vault KL currently occupies a single floor, but Patricia and Darren already are in the midst of expanding to two more floors. The bar comfortably sits 80 for now so The Vault KL encourages patrons to make a reservation beforehand.
